It’s high summer, and while the upcoming school year may be far from our minds, it’s never too early to confirm that your child has received his or her necessary vaccinations required to attend school or to participate in preschool or other childcare programs. What if Parents Can’t or Don’t Wish to Meet Requirements?

school-vac-2For the 2015-16 school year, children who lack one or more of the vaccine doses required by the State of California may be admitted to school on the condition they receive the remaining doses based on the e Conditional Admission Immunization Schedule. Parents who do not wish to vaccinate their child may seek an exemption on the basis of personal beliefs or medical conditions. A new law passed this year and scheduled to take effect July 1, 2016, however, eliminates the personal belief exemption. This means, after the 2015-16 school year parents will not be able to enroll their child in public or private school unless:

  • Immunization requirements are met; or
  • Parents have secured a medical exemption from the child’s healthcare provider; or
  • Parents have submitted a personal belief exemption prior to January 1, 2016; in such cases, that exemption will only be allowed until the student reaches kindergarten or 7th grade.
  • Students are enrolled in a home-based private school, independent study program that is not classroom-based, or a special education program (including related services specified in an individualized education program)
